In August of 2000 Musicians Showcase
Recordings (www.msrcd.com) released The Deeper Magic: Music
from 20th Century America for Violin and Viola, featuring works
by Ted Hansen, David
Cleary,
Myron Fink and Bohuslav Martinu. The following is excerpted
from a review of the disc by David K. Nelson which appeared
in Fanfare magazine, January-February 2001.
Mark and Ute Miller are Texas-based performers and teachers,
and both also worked and studied in Germany. If you doubt
whether the principals of the North East Texas Symphony can
make a competitive recording, think again. These are marvelous
string-players, with rich, full sounds, razor-sharp musical
instincts, and exceptional intonation. There are not many
touring violin/viola duos, but there is a considerable repertoire
for the combination, wondrous music mostly known to musicians.
Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) wrote one of the best such duets,
his Three Madrigals, composed for (and recorded by) Joseph and
Lillian Fuchs. I reviewed a very good Elan CD by Elmar
Oliveira and Sandra Robbins in 13:5. The follow-up work
was this duo No. 2 of 1950, written for Lillian Fuchs.
It is, like much of Martinus music, a virtuoso romp for
great players, perhaps almost too active, with ingenious doubling
of lines, sudden octaves and unisons, rich harmonies, and a
real workout for both musicians. This three-movement work
was entirely new to me but has quickly become a favorite; the
Millers play it with infectious zest
